What the evidence actually says
No controlled trial of scrubs with actives exists, and the 2024 guideline makes no recommendation on mechanical exfoliation at all. The AAD’s patient guidance is the best available source and is specific: exfoliating while using retinoid creams, retinol or benzoyl peroxide may worsen dry skin or even cause breakouts, and those with acne-prone skin may find mechanical exfoliation too irritating.
So how should you actually use them?
